A Clinical Observation on 129 Cases with Thyroid Nodules



Abstract
A clinical observation was performed on 129 patients with thyroid nodules, who had been admitted to Chonnam university hospital during 5 years from January 1, 1978 to January 31, 1983.
The results were obtained as follows;
1. Of 129 nodular goiters, 117 cases were female and 12 cases were male.
2. The major age distribution was in the range between 20 and 59 years of age (91.4%).
3. All nodular goiters consisted of 124 cases (96.1%) of nontoxic and 5 cases (3.9%) of toxic nodular goiters. Among the nontoxic goiters, 94 cases (75.8%) had solitary nodule.
4. High proportion of multinodular goiter was observed in older age group over 40-year-old.
5. According to the pathological findings of 129 cases, follicular adenoma comprised 51.2%, papillary carcinoma 18.0%, undifferentiated carcinoma 2.3%, follcular carcinoma 3.9%, Hashimoto¢¥s thyroiditis 3.9% and nonspecific nodule 24.8% respectively.
6. Of 5 cases with toxic goiter, 3 cases were malignant.
7. There was no statistically significant correlation between 131I-uptake rates and pathological findings.
